Core prompt: Lightweight components made from fiber reinforced plastics make wind turbines more efficient, sports cars faster and airc

Lightweight components made from fiber reinforced plastics make wind turbines more efficient, sports cars faster and aircraft stronger. At ThyssenKrupp too, promising areas of application are opening up for carbon fiber-reinforced plastics for example through multi-material designs in combination with innovative steel solutions.

To develop new applications for these technologies, reduce manufacturing costs and so help lightweight materials achieve a breakthrough, ThyssenKrupp AG has opened the TechCenter Carbon Composites in Dresden. The center will develop projects and ideas to production readiness. Over the next three years, the Group will be investing in capacities and pilot facilities to design, simulate and produce carbon fiber composite parts.

The TechCenter Carbon Composites will bring together the Group’s capabilities in this area of technology and support ongoing projects throughout the Group. It will also target collaborations with external partners along the entire value chain - for example with the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology at Technische Universität Dresden.

In keeping with the global trend towards lightweight construction, with the TechCenter Carbon Composites ThyssenKrupp is adding a further class of materials to its materials capabilities and focusing on developing promising solutions for weight reduction in the automotive and other industries.

ThyssenKrupp has over 150,000 employees in around 80 countries working with passion and expertise to develop solutions for sustainable progress. Their skills and commitment are the basis of our success. In fiscal year 2011/2012 ThyssenKrupp generated sales of €40 billion.
